Sarnia Fire and Rescue Service says unattended cooking was the cause of a house fire in south end Sarnia Sunday afternoon.
One occupant was taken to hospital and a city firefighter suffered minor injury in the blaze on Tunnel St.
Smoke and flames could be seen coming from the home's exterior when crews responded at about 3:40pm. 20 firefighters from four stations were able to contain the fire to the kitchen and attic/roof area. An occupant of the dwelling was transported to hospital for smoke inhalation and later released. Damage to the building and its contents is estimated at $150,000. Fire officials urge the public to never leave items unattended on the stove, saying it's the most common type of cooking fire and takes only a few seconds for a fire to start.
