Lambton Public Health is reporting the first evidence of West Nile virus in the area.
Test results received Friday confirm a dead crow found in Sarnia's north end June 5 has tested positive for the virus.
West Nile virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito but the majority of people infected do not get sick. Less than one per cent get seriously ill.
Lambton Public Health recommends avoiding high mosquito populations, wearing protective, light-coloured clothing and using repellants containing DEET.
Areas of standing or stagnant water on properties should be drained.
