Safeguarding Sarnias Drinking Water

Sarnia City Council approved in principle a Backflow Prevention By-law and mandate Monday.

Water and Wastewater Compliance Inspector Katherine Gray says the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change is urging municipalities to implement Backflow Prevention Programs.

She says select property owners would be required to have backflow prevention devices installed to stop the possible contamination of the drinking water supply.

City staff will be undertaking a public consultation process and will return to council for final approval later this year.

The Village of Pt. Edward and the Town of Petrolia implemented Backflow Prevention By-laws in 2014.
