Enhanced Rural Internet Discussed

Lambton County Council heard a presentation from Grey County's Director of IT about the possibility of installing fibre optics county wide.

Geoff Hogan spoke about the South West Integrated Fibre Technology or SWIFT project during a meeting in Wyoming Wednesday afternoon. He says agriculture is becoming more dependent on technology and there's a growing need for high speed internet in rural Ontario.

Although there's existing fibre optics throughout some areas of the county, Hogan says the SWIFT project would help drive competition among businesses.

He says municipal governments are asked to contribute a total of $16-million of the $227-million cost with the rest coming from senior government and the private sector.

Council referred the matter to its 2015 budget deliberations.
