OPP respond to online speculation after Wingham school fire

Ontario Provincial Police are pushing back on online rumours surrounding last week’s serious incident at F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham.

In an email to CKNXNewsToday.ca, Craig Soldan with the Ontario Provincial Police says no charges have been laid and there is "no change" in the information released by investigators so far.

Soldan also noted "lots of rumours" have been circulating about the incident, but says there are no plans to issue a further media release at this time.

The update comes after a student was critically injured in a fire inside the school on April 7, 2026. Police have previously said the student was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries, and the investigation remains ongoing.

OPP continue to ask anyone with information to contact police and are reminding the public not to share unverified information online.
