Fraudulent paving crews may be operating in the St. Marys and Perth County area.
Stratford police received a report of one possible fraudulent crew in the region on Wednesday.
Paving scams have been seen in previous years and involve companies that solicit customers by providing low prices for work that is either not done or completed very poorly. Last July, several people from the United Kingdom were arrested in relation to a paving fraud in the Stratford area.
To avoid falling victim to a paving scam, police advise homeowners to check references, research company names online, and look for company reviews with the Better Business Bureau. Homeowners should also contact local companies directly to confirm what is being offered at the door is legitimate.
"Always be wary of persons who ask for payment upfront," Stratford police said. "Most importantly, if it sounds too good to be true, it likely is."
