Gardener in Residence in Owen Sound

Gardeners can dig into some interesting information at The Owen Sound and North Grey Union Public Library.

Information Service Specialist, Cvitka Marun, has announced that Grey County Master Gardeners members have offered to lead three Gardener in Residence programs this fall.

"The Master Gardeners from the province of Ontario, are experienced gardeners who studied horticulture extensively, and they want to offer more outreach and programming to the general public," Marun explained. "So every month, there's a different gardening theme where they do a demo that takes about half an hour. And then after that, there's a drop-in advice clinic where you can ask about anything in regards to any kind of gardening."

Marun pointed out the program is an interactive experience. The first session is Tuesday starting at 2 p.m. which will focus on the Importance of Soil Health.

"So building your soil, about soil type, pH, soil testing, soil texture, so building a foundation for putting in your plants," she continued.

Marun added the next session will be on Tuesday, October 15.

"In October, we have sustainable garden cleanup," she said. "So how to tidy your garden and also thinking about the pollinators and leaving an environment for pollinators to live through the winter until the spring, not removing everything, but, you know, keeping some elements, so some kind of habitat for them."

The November 19 session is about integrated pest management.

Marun stressed the importance of diverse learning opportunities at libraries.

"Information should be for everybody, and information about a whole bunch of different things. Not only just about, you know, reading your favourite authors, it's a lot more interactive. So events that take place, you can learn about things from the experts," she concluded. "Showcasing what we have in this community, local people, local gardeners, local events. And I guess just a learning environment. So you learn with others, or you can learn on your own, by taking a book out, or come in and join the experts, and learn about gardens."

Members of the Grey County Master Gardeners will also be available to offer drop in advice following each session, from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m.
