Flood Outlook issued for Ausable Bayfield and Grand River watersheds

Heavy rain from the remnants of Hurricane Beryl is expected to impact the Ausable Bayfield and Grand River watersheds, potentially causing minor flooding. Both conservation authorities have issued flood outlook statements as the storm is forecasted to bring 50-60 mm of rain, with localized areas potentially receiving up to 100 mm.

The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) forecasts rainfall from Tuesday night, July 9, 2024, through early Thursday morning. River levels are expected to rise starting Wednesday morning, peaking over the weekend. Major flooding is not anticipated, but caution is advised around waterways. Residents are reminded to keep children and pets away from creeks and rivers during the summer break.

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) anticipates rainfall from late Tuesday through Thursday. While water levels are currently normal, they are expected to rise significantly due to the rain and potential thunderstorms. Low-lying, poorly drained, and urbanized areas may experience flooding. GRCA reservoirs will manage runoff to reduce downstream flooding.

Both authorities urge extreme caution around local waterways due to slippery banks and fast-moving water. These flood outlooks will remain in effect until July 12 for the GRCA and July 15 for the ABCA.
