Saugeen Shores residents won't have to put the skates away in the summer next year, as council will be trying out year-round ice at the Plex.
Council approved the three-year pilot program that will run from 2025 to 2027, before a decision is made on the long-term future.
Council received a detailed report at Monday's meeting from Director of Community Services Kristen Shrider, which estimated just under $250,000 in revenues generated from keeping the ice for 12 months.
Mayor Luke Charbonneau said unlike when the idea was first presented in 2020, the numbers show it's more feasible now.
"With this report, it becomes clear that there is a path forward to do this and have it not negatively impact the taxpayer, in fact offset the deficit the Plex runs and will continue to run," he said. "I think that makes a real clear argument to advance this, have a look at it, see if those numbers can be achieved... these are very expensive facilities and anything that we can do to reduce that operating cost at the same time as enhancing services to our residents is a net win."
While a survey conducted by staff this spring showed support for the pilot program, Charbonneau encouraged user groups to take advantage so that it sticks around long-term.
"Bottom line is, it will now depend on the success over these three years— achieving these numbers or doing better — what will happen beyond that," he said. "If we run deficits, if it becomes a burden on the taxpayer rather than a benefit, it's unlikely to continue... So let's book it all up and then you'll have a 12 month ice program."
Staff estimated that ice would be booked for around 50 hours a week in the first year and increase slightly each year after that.
Floor rentals will be switched over to the Coliseum while the town tries out the idea and staff said keeping ice at the Plex would not impact the construction of the neighbouring Aquatic and Wellness Centre.
Council would also consider purchasing an ice cover system at the end of the pilot program for an estimated $270,000 + HST.
