Life Jacket loaner program now available in Saugeen Shores

Saugeen Shores is introducing a new Life Jacket Loaner Program at Port Elgin Main Beach, supported by a $2,500 donation from the Society of United Professionals Bruce Power Local.

Starting this May long weekend, residents and visitors can borrow life jackets, available in sizes from kids to Adult (XL), free of charge.

Mayor Luke Charbonneau highlighted the importance of the initiative.

"Wearing a life jacket significantly reduces the risk of drowning," he said. "We are proud to team up with the Society to increase accessibility to these life-saving devices, ensuring everyone can safely enjoy Lake Huron."

Matt Barfoot, Unit 4 Director for the Society of United Professionals, agreed

"This program provides easy access to life jackets, addressing the significant water safety risks associated with Lake Huron," he said.

The life jackets will be regularly inspected by an aquatics team member throughout the season. The Town will evaluate the program at the end of 2024 to consider expanding it to other recreational beaches.
