Nuclear Waste petition presented in Parliament

A petition urging government oversight of a contentious nuclear waste burial project has been formally tabled in the House of Commons.

Spearheaded by Brennain Lloyd of Northwatch and backed by Nipissing-Timiskaming MP Anthony Rota, the petition demands a response within 45 days.

With 3,327 signatures, the petition calls for the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) to secure consent from residents, communities, First Nations, and Treaty Organizations along the transportation route and near potential repository sites before selecting a location.

South Bruce is poised for a referendum on October 28, 2024 regarding its involvement in the project, contingent on a minimum voter turnout of 50 per cent. Critics argue that Ignace's distance from the candidate site and differing watershed make it unsuitable as a "host" community.

The federal government now has 45 days to address the concerns.
