Brightshores Health System and Owen Sound Police Services (OSPS) successfully completed a mock active shooter exercise on May 9.
"Especially with an active attacker, we're always looking to make sure that we are responding in a quick, efficient manner to get our staff and patients in a safe environment and also that we have a quick response from our local police force to ensure they know where they're going and can quickly deal with the situation," said Jesse Dixon, director of support services with Brightshores.
The exercise had 33 participants, playing many roles to ensure everyone in the unit under simulated attack was accounted for.
"We also had observers that were both from Owen Sound Police and Brightshores, and we had patient advocates as well," said Dixon.
Participants were given a script that started with an argument, progressing into a more severe situation.
