UPDATE: Hold and secure lifted at Chesley school

Chesley District Community School is no longer under a hold and secure, according to the Bluewater District School Board.

South Bruce OPP said the school was placed under a hold and secure around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday as police investigated a robbery in the area.

Constable Matthew Thorpe says the investigation's proximity to the school is what prompted the action.

"Right now, we're just in the very preliminary stages of an altercation that happened," he said. "The reason for the hold and secure at the school is just the vicinity of our location to the school, so out of an abundance of caution we just advised that the school should keep their doors shut."

When asked if a student was involved in the altercation, Thorpe said details weren't clear.

"My understanding right now is that it could have involved a student outside of the school area, but nothing necessarily targeting the school itself," he said.

A spokesperson for the board said the measure was lifted around 2:45 p.m. as police determined that the area was clear.

The school is still requesting that parents/guardians of walkers arrange pick-up from school at the end of the day. Students can be picked up at the front entrance. If parents/guardians are experiencing challenges with organizing a pick-up, they are asked to contact the school directly.

Police will provide more updates on the situation when they come available.
