Another successful year for Coastal Conservation Youth Corps

Another season of the Lake Huron Coastal Centre's Coastal Conservation Youth Corps has wrapped up.

Coastal Education Technician, Kerry Kennedy, says they had a very busy summer and most of their members were able to complete all of their volunteer hours in the one-week sessions they had.

“We did lots of activities along the shoreline from coastal clean-ups to monitoring water quality and shoreline conditions to a big planting and restoration at Gobles Grove in Port Elgin. Another huge project was down in Grand Bend," Kennedy said.

Kennedy says the project in Grand Bend involved working with the residents there to remove some invasive species in the Old Ausable Channel. Kennedy adds any chance they get to work with the residents of the area makes a great experience for the Youth Corps members and the residents.

Before they start recruiting Youth Corps members for next year, Kennedy says they have to find some funding.

“Our government grant funding has expired, so our opportunities for next year will be fully dependent on community and corporate support, so until we secure that funding then the program is in jeopardy," stated Kennedy.

Kennedy says they're going to be counting on members of the community or corporate sponsors to increase their donations so they can continue to offer the program next year. Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so by going to the web site at lakehuron.ca.
