Essex-area residents continue clean up from Wednesday’s storm

Many residents in Essex County continue to clean up damage and debris caused by a storm that tore through the region on Wednesday.

The Town of Essex said Thursday that crews remain on scene in municipalities including Harrow and Colchester clearing blocked roadways, and repairing widespread hydro outages in collaboration with E.L.K. Energy and Hydro One. Other regional organizations have also been called in to assist with clean up.

Mayor Sherry Bondy issued a statement Thursday afternoon thanking municipal staff including Essex’s Public Works Team, Parks and Facilities Team, Essex Fire and Rescue Services and admin staff, along with several other outside groups for assisting.

“Their prompt and tireless efforts in managing storm operations have been essential in restoring power, clearing debris, and ensuring the safety and well-being of our community,” said Bondy.

While clean up continues, residents are asked to use extreme caution and follow all safety advisories issued by public authorities. Unnecessary travel is also advised against for the time being as road conditions remain a hazard in some areas.

Those with fallen trees and branches on their private properties are responsible for removing them. Downed branches and stumps can be dropped off at a Essex‐Windsor Solid Waste Authority (EWSWA), however some size restrictions apply.

Branches and stumps under 18" in diameter, but less than 48" long can be dropped off for free, while yard waste over 18” in diameter, but less than 36” long, will be charged as garbage.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to all those who are working tirelessly to address the impacts of this severe storm,” read a statement from the Town of Essex.

Drop-off times at each EWSWA location are as follows:

Public Drop Off Depot in Windsor at 3560 North Service Rd. E.: Monday to Saturday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Transfer Station #2 in Kingsville at 2021 Albuna Townline, County Rd. 31: Monday to Friday: 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and Saturday: 8 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

Regional Recycling Depot in Essex at 7700 County Rd. 18: Monday to Friday: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday: 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
