Job fair coming to Wingham

The Township of North Huron and Huron County have partnered on a job fair to be held in Wingham.

Huron County Workforce Coordinator Oonagh Vaucrosson says the job fair is in response to local layoffs.

“This is in response to the layoffs that have been happening over the course of the year at Wescast and it is our understanding that Wescast will be closing in Wingham and there will be a number of employees that will find themselves without a job," Vaucrosson said.

Vaucrosson says their hope is that through the job fair, Wescast employees could be matched with any manufacturing jobs that are available. She adds, there is no cost to either employees or employers to attend the job fair on Tuesday, July 18 at the Royal Canadian Legion on Victoria Street in Wingham and it runs from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Vaucrosson says she doesn't have an exact number of employees that might end up without a job.

“We understand that there are around a hundred and fifty that will be entering the labour market towards the end of this month. I can't say exactly how many over the course of this year but probably more than that," added Vaucrosson.

Vaucrosson says Wescast Industries has been a pillar of the Wingham community for several years and the closure of the plant will have a significant impact on the town.
