The Brussels, Morris, and Grey Community Centre is getting an overhaul.
$4.7 million will be used to upgrade and expand the facility.
The project includes an enhanced fitness centre, kitchen facilities, auditorium and new dressing rooms that meet Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act requirements.
The investment is being made through the Culture and Recreation Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program with support from all three levels of government.
The Government of Canada is contributing $1,915,200; the Government of Ontario is contributing $1,595,840 while the municipality of Huron East is adding $1,276,959 to the project.
The funding was announced late Tuesday afternoon.
“My co-chair John VanVliet and I would like to say that this is an absolutely amazing announcement for Brussels and area," stated Doug McArter in a release. He is the co-chair of the renovation and revitalization project.
"This grant funding investment by the federal, provincial and municipal governments will ensure our beloved Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre will stay viable for many years to come we couldn’t be happier! We still have a lot of work ahead of us and we know the people of Brussels and area will get behind our project with the support and excitement Brussels is so used to as we continue this investment in our future!”
MPP for Huron-Bruce was on hand for the announcement.
“Community centres and arenas are the heartbeat of a community,” said Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson. “That is why I am so pleased to see this tri-level agreement get approved. It will be exciting to see the centre when the work has been completed."
Huron East Mayor Bernie MacLellan says the arena is an example of cooperation.
"The BMG facility is an excellent example of the cooperation of two local municipalities working with the residents of both municipalities to provide a multi-purpose facility serving the needs of the community. The assistance provided by both the Federal and Provincial governments will ensure that the BMG facility meets the needs of the community for many years to come.”
And with federal dollars also being put into the project, Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb was happy to see the project get approved.
“The Brussels, Morris, and Grey Community Centre is a cornerstone for community activity in Brussels,” he said. “The arena renovation and expansion is a critical project to ensure the ongoing access to things like minor hockey and the fair for people in the community, and on behalf of the riding of Huron-Bruce, I’m glad to see the funding made available for this project to proceed.”
