West Grey officer cleared in arrest of suspect who suffered a collapsed lung

A West Grey police officer has been cleared of any criminal offense in the arrest of a 68-year-old man who suffered a collapsed lung.

In a release, the province's Special Investigations Unit says the incident happened in the early morning hours on June 6th, 2020.

Director Joseph Martino said in his report the man became combative with police while they were investigating a domestic disturbance complaint at a home in West Grey.

Officers used a taser and a baton to subdue the man who then had trouble breathing. He was taken to Durham hospital then air lifted to London with a collapsed lung. The report says it appears none of the man's ribs were fractured.

The SIU investigates any incident where there is serious injury, including sexual assault, or death involving police.
