School board supporting families in battle for cancelled trip refunds

Trustees with the Avon Maitland District School Board have passed a motion supporting the families of students at Stratford District Secondary School in their fight to get a refund from Explorica Travel.

Board Chair, Robert Hunking, explains several students had booked a flight, through Explorica, to go to Italy and France.

“This motion was dealing with just one trip from students at Stratford District Secondary School, who had booked a trip through Explorica to Italy and France and because of COVID, it was cancelled and they are still waiting to get their refund back.”

Hunking says the refund amounts to about 44-hundred dollars per family.

He adds, the company has actually refunded each family one hundred dollars, as a goodwill gesture.

“The company actually refunded them all one hundred dollars, sort of out of goodwill and from our understanding now it's a fight between the trip company Explorica and their insurance company about who should actually be paying the refund.”

Hunking points out, the Board can't get involved legally, but they do support the parents and he says a class action suit is going forward from the parents.
