OPP highlight dangerous conditions in search for swimmer

Provincial police are detailing just how difficult the search for a missing swimmer in Saugeen First Nation was on Sunday.

The swimmer began struggling in high waves in Lake Huron around 4 p.m. Sunday and emergency crews were called.

But OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt said rescue efforts was hampered by dangerous conditions. He posted a video on Twitter outlining the concerns.

"With moving currents, moving water, there is always the potential for danger and hazards," said Schmidt. "Our marine officers were not able to even launch some of their boats because of high water up at Sauble Beach. Six to eight-foot waves were reported coming from different directions with very challenging winds."

Authorities did pull a body from the waters of Lake Huron on Tuesday after the search continued through the early part of the week.

An OPP helicopter and two boats were involved in the search. Also helping were South Bruce Peninsula Fire Department, Saugeen First Nation Fire Department and Saugeen Shores Fire Department, as well as Joint Rescue Coordination Centre run by Royal Canadian Air Force and Canadian Coast Guard.

Police have since identified the deceased as 29-year-old Kevin Costin from Wellington North.

Schmidt said marine fatalities in the province are much higher this year than last year.

Updated from a previous version to include the victim's name.
