North Huron trying to tackle employment and housing issues

The municipality of North Huron is dealing with two problems that are common to many local communities --  it doesn't have enough people to fill the jobs that are available, and it doesn't have enough available housing for people who might be interested in moving to North Huron to fill the jobs.

CAO Dwayne Evans said the municipality's largest employer, Wescast Industries, is looking for employees and the municipality has created an ad hoc committee to address both problems.

"We have an ad hoc committee that has been formed, comprised of local politicians, local staff, county and the local employers,  and we have some employment agencies as well sitting at the table," he said.

Evans said they have had some success in recruiting newcomers to fill some of the jobs, but finding housing for them is still a challenge and they're looking at alternatives to the conventional single-family homes.

"There's other housing options out there. There's tiny homes and there's modular homes," he said. "Those are some possibilities of temporary housing that we could be looking at. So we're going to be investigating that a little bit further and to see whether that is a possibility for us."
