Ontario Seniors' Strategy expected this fall

The province has wrapped up consultation on a new seniors' strategy.

The Ontario government said meetings were held with hundreds of seniors and organizations for six weeks. An online survey was also available.

The government received over 7,800 online surveys and more than 6,200 were from individuals 55 and older. A government-wide seniors strategy that will help improve the lives of seniors is expected to be released in fall 2019. The strategy is expected to help seniors stay healthy, active and socially connected. The province hopes to address challenges seniors have in accessing programs and services that support their safety, mental and physical health, and overall well-being.

Current estimates predict that the seniors' population will grow to over three million by 2023 – about 400,000 more seniors than today. Ontario is home to the largest community of immigrant seniors in Canada.

"This summer I had the privilege of listening to seniors, their families, caregivers and the organizations who care for them," said Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility. "Thank you to the thousands of people who took the time to share their ideas and wisdom -- whether in person or online -- we heard you."

"Our government has the highest regard for seniors and their families, and we are committed to protecting what matters most to them," said Cho. "We are carefully reviewing all of the feedback collected, and it will be used to develop a cross-government strategy to help improve the lives of seniors."
