Local MPP Named Chief Government Whip

Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker confirms he will be named chief government whip.

Walker says he was honoured by Ontario Premier Doug Ford asked him to fill the position and says he attended a meeting Tuesday to "find out the nuts and bolts of what I need to do in the role".

Whips are responsible for ensuring that members of the governing party attend and vote in the provincial Legislature as the party leadership desires.

Walker confirms he was encouraged by a number of colleagues and staff to seek the position of Speaker of the House, but ultimately did not put his name forward after Ford offered him the position of whip.

A group of Tory MPP's are seeking the speaker's chair on Wednesday, including Ted Arnott (Wellington-Halton Hills), Jane McKenna (Burlington), Randy Hillier (Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston) and Rick Nichols (Chatham-Kent-Leamington).
