Grey Bruce Health Unit Calls For Healthy Arena Food

A Grey Bruce Health Unit study has found arenas and community centres aren't making healthy food choices available.

The Health Unit surveyed recreational facilities and found concessions and vending machines provide little in the way of healthy food.

Public Health Manager Lynda Bumstead says they'd like to change that. She says they're suggesting municipalities who operate recreational facilities set up healthy food guidelines for vendors.

She adds the goal is to change peoples' attitudes toward the food they eat both at home and at play.

Bumstead says what they don't want is children taking in more calories at the concession stand than they just worked off playing sports and games.

The Grey Bruce Health Unit would also like to see bottled water phased out.
