London pole vaulter brings home bronze

Alysha Newman has won Canada's first-ever Olympic medal in women's pole vault.

Newman earned a bronze medal on Wednesday after clearing a height of 4.85 metres, a new Canadian record.

U.S. silver medalist Katie Moon was also unable to clear the next height of 4.9 metres, but Newman had one more missed attempt in the competition.

Nina Kennedy of Australia won gold after clearing 4.9 on her first attempt.

This was the 30-year-old's third time competing at the Olympics, but only her first time making the finals. She came in 17th in Rio 2016 and wasn't able to make any jumps in Tokyo 2020.

This is Canada's third medal in athletics in the 2024 games.
