OEHL brings back historic trophy

Ahead of its first playoffs as the rebranded Ontario Elite Hockey League, the senior league is restoring a trophy with 90 years of history.

The league announced Wednesday it would be bringing back the OEHL Cup. The trophy was first awarded in 1935, to the Ontario Hockey Association’s Intermediate B champions.

Aside from a halt in play during World War II, the trophy was awarded annually for the next 36 years, until a reorganization of Intermediate hockey lead to it being retired.

Past champions of the Intermediate B Championship include the Durham Huskies and Seaforth.

The Cup will now be awarded to the champions of the AA Playoffs.

The regular season concludes this weekend with five games, and only the top seeded Ripley Wolves are sure of their place in the standings.
