Local athletes power Canada to bronze at WBSC U-18 Men's Softball World Cup

Durham's Alex McGillivray helped lead Canada to a bronze medal win with a two-run home run in a 2-1 win over the U.S. at the WBSC U-18 Men's Softball World Cup in Hermosillo, Mexico on November 19.

With Canada down 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, McGillivray crushed the ball to left field to give Canada the lead.

Canadian pitcher Nic Neid, who hails from Terrace, B.C., was able to shut the door in the seventh, throwing a complete game allowing just one run on four hits and striking out 11 U.S. batters.

The Canadian team's roster saw a number of highlights throughout the eight day tournament including wins over Australia, the U.S. and the Czech Republic through the opening round. That effort got the team into the Super Round. Canada then squeezed out a 6-5 win over Venezuela in eight innings in their final Super Round game to book their spot in the bronze medal game Sunday.

The roster also featured six players from Midwestern Ontario that played key roles in the team's accomplishment.

Stratford's Danny Scott, Durham's Alex McGillivray and Hepworth's Joseph Weiler made up the Canadian outfield in the bronze medal game. All three also play local junior hockey, with Scott and McGillivray teammates on the Listowel Cyclones and Weiler with the Mount Forest Patriots.

On the infield, Newton's Anthony Brubacher played shortstop and Wingham's Riley Good started at third base, before moving to first later in the game. Good played a big part in Canada's win over Venezuela Saturday to get Canada to this bronze medal opportunity, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Also on the Canadian roster for the tournament was Arthur's Nolan Bultena and New Hamburg's Cohen Christner.
