St. Marys Lincolns set the tone for the season

The St. Marys Lincolns are off to a hot start in the GOJHL Western Conference.

St. Marys has five wins and a tie in their first six games. The team only had 11 wins all of last season and finished out of the playoffs.

Head coach Trent McClement says players have stepped up early.

"When you can bring back veterans, you have everything in place and you start the season off by just rolling right away," said McClement.

And depth has played a role as 13 players have scored at least one goal. And six players have at least six points or more including the captain, Palmerston native, Blair Butchart who leads the team with 11 points.

"In junior hockey everyone goes into a drought. So I think this year with our depth right now, like we have a guy like Thomas McLatchie who already has seven goals," said coach McClement.

And he certainly knows what it takes to win, leading the Mount Forest Patriots to back to back Pollock Division championships in the PJHL in 2016-17 and 2018-19. Even though it was a bit a rough start when he made the transition into the GOJHL last season, McClement says there is more of a comfort level now.

"It's definitely been nice here. I think we have a great organization, great staff, great people supporting us. I hope to bring them a winner here," added McClement.

St. Marys hosts Leamington Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
