Sugar Kings sweeter than Dutchmen

The Elmira Sugar Kings jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the road and beat Kitchener 5-2 in the opening game of their GOJHL Midwest quarter-final series.

Hunter Dubecki and Matt Tolton gave Elmira a 2-0 lead through the first period. Tolton, who is with the Wingham Ironmen in the PJHL, was called up for the game making his eighth appearance in the GOJHL this season.

The Sugar Kings would score another two in the second period before Kitchener was able to respond. Zack Cameron's goal was unassisted and Anthony Azzano also scored.

The Dutchmen's goal came on the power play off the stick of Tyler Harrison. Alex Peterson also scored for Kitchener in the second period but that was it.

The only goal in the third was scored by Elmira's Ivan Brewer.

Elmira goalie Mat Woroniuk made 34 saves, while Lucas Patton made 17 saves.

Game 2 of the series is Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Elmira.

The other series also get under way this week; Cambridge in Waterloo at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Brampton in Listowel at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Brantford in Stratford at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Cherrey Buslines OHA Hockey on CKNX will be in Listowel for the Bombers - Cyclones game.
