With the Memorial Cup kicking off last night, the Windsor Spitfires are making sure they have players available in case of injury.
They have Listowel Cyclones goalie Brock Baier in Windsor to take in the tournament, acting as a failsafe should starter Michael Dipietro or Mario Kulina suffer an injury. Baier, who will likely be a full-time Spitfire next year, says it's amazing to be in the host city for the Memorial Cup.
"It's honestly awesome and I'm going to take it all in over the next ten days, and hopefully Windsor is ready to come to play. I can't say enough about this, it's awesome down here."
Baier says it doesn't get any better than the Memorial Cup tournament.
"You have the Stanley Cup for the NHL, but this is the big fish for everyone in junior hockey. Everyone in the room, including myself, are in awe sometimes, but I think we are all really focused and ready to go."
Brock also says future goalie partner Michael Dipietro is someone who always prepares to play the right way, and that pushes him to be similar.
"That honestly motivates me to be a goalie like him, never give up on plays, and always putting in extra work, and that's exactly what I'm going to do. These guys are all tremendous guys and they support me, and I couldn't ask for a better group to be around."
Baier was the GOJHL Midwest rookie of the year this season, helping the Listowel Cyclones capture their second ever Cherrey Cup.
