Young Canada Week In Goderich

The 67th annual Lions Young Canada Week Pee Wee Hockey Tournament gets underway this morning in Goderich.

Richard Madge says they have 36 teams this year in Boys C, Girls C, Boys AE and Boys D and Boys Local League, about the same as last year. This year there are a couple of teams that have made a lengthy trip to play, one from Kawartha and one from Powassan.

Madge says the number of teams works well with the new format of only playing on weekends so by each Sunday night a champion has been decided and that frees the players up to enjoy the rest of their March Break.

Madge says the girls division in the tournament is very strong and that is being reflected in the opening ceremonies at 7:00pm tonight with a special recognition of the first girl to play in the tournament and that is Audrey McCabe who played for the Saltford Spitfires in 1950.

The first games gets underway at 8:30am this morning.
