Walkerton To Finals, Bulldogs Need One More

The Walkerton Hawks scored three goals in a seven minute flurry in the second period to advance to the Western Jr. C Finals.

Walkerton opened the first half of the first period with a blitz, shooting at the Mitchell net at every opportunity. Mitchell goalie Brock Baier stood his ground. By the end of the first period everything was even between teams. Both had 10 shots on net, both 0-for-2 on the powerplay and both with multiple chances.

Walkerton forward Brooks Nelthorpe opened the scoring in the second period. As a Walkerton penalty expired a Mitchell shot ricocheted off a Walkerton defencemen and bounced to centre ice. Nelthorpe picked up the puck, and skating in on the right wing, and snapped a shot that went in high on the short side. That was at the 5:03 mark.

Nelthorpe scored his second goal of the game at the 11:36 mark on a breakaway with a shot that went in high glove. Walkerton scored again just over a minute later after a wrap around attempt led to a scramble in front of the net, Tyler Cunningham credited with that goal.

The third period belonged to Mitchellc hance wise. But Walkerton goalie Nick Redman frustrated Mitchell shooters and gave up few rebounds. With just over six minutes to go, and down 3-0, Mitchell pulled the goaltender to add an extra attacker. After an early chance Walkerton got the puck out of the zone and scored on the empty net.

Mitchell's goals came at 17:50 and 19:27 of the third period. The team was 0-for-6 on the powerplay.

Walkerton will host Game 1 of the league finals and the schedule is to be determined.

Notes: Goalie Eric Angeli will serve as Walkerton's back up for the remainder of the playoffs, he won a league championship with the Hawks last season winning 13 playoff games

Kincardine 9 Mount Forest 4 Kincardine leads semi-final series 3-2

Kincardine's special teams ruled the night and now the team has a chance to advance to the league finals with one more win.

The Bulldogs scored three short handed goals including one to open the scoring in the first period and one to open the scoring in the third period. Kincardine also went 4-for-6 on the powerplay.

All four of Mount Forest's goals were scored even strength and the team was 0-for-9 on the powerplay.

Game 6 of the series is in Mount Forest tonight at 8pm.
