Wingham Silver Stick Tournament Continues

The Tournament Director for the Wingham Atom Silver Stick Tournament was on hand for the opening ceremonies of this year’s tournament last night at North Huron Wescast Arena.

Jason Goodall has been tournament director for 5 years now, and was joined at centre ice by Midget tournament director Grant Currie and WOAA President Al Dickson. Dickson dropped the ceremonial puck in last night’s first game between Wingham and Drayton. Wingham beat Drayton 12-1, and in the second game last night West Grey beat South Bruce 4-1.

Goodall says the tournament is a great thing for the community of Wingham, which is hosting an Atom Silver Stick for the 30th year and hosted the midget tournament earlier for the 50th year.

However, Goodall mentioned it is “a little bit unfortunate” that the C division tournament was cut down from 12 teams to 10 this year, and says he thinks the dwindling numbers are due to so many centre amalgamations throughout the region.

Despite the smaller draw of teams this year, Goodall says the tournament is off to a great start and he feels that “it will continue to go forward and be an important part of the winter calendar in Wingham.”
