Saugeen Shores native Josh Farrell has won a gold medal at the Parapan Am Games in Toronto.
The 30-year old captured Canada's fifth gold in the F20 Shot Put event Monday night, throwing a distance of 14.05 setting an America's Record in the process. Farrell's winning throw came during his fourth attempt after faulting during his third attempt. He also faulted in his fifth and sixth attempts.
Farrell's throw outdistanced two competitors from Venezuela and one from Ecuador.
Also in athletics, Port Elgin's Josh Cassidy raced to a silver medal in the men's 5000 m wheelchair race finishing just 4-100th's of a second behind American Daniel Romanchuk. Cassidy is still scheduled to compete in the 800 m and 1500 m events.
Earlier in the day, Wiarton area native Karen Van Nest captured silver in the women's archery Compound Open event. Van Nest was edged 140-132 in a shoot off by a Brazilian competitor.
