Chepstow Lightning National Champions

The Chepstow Lang Farms Lightning captured the national championship at the U16 Boy's Canadian Fast Pitch Championships in Prince Albert Saskatchewan beating Glencoe 7-0 in five innings.

The team dominated the round robin going 7-0 to set up its playoff run. But despite the team powering its way through the round robin and beating Newfoundland 9-4 in a playoff game, the team ran into some trouble against Glencoe in the playoffs.

The two teams were no strangers to each other having met head to head several times through provincial play with Chepstow coming out on top every time. And after winning 20-1 in a round robin game last Thursday, the statistics favoured the Midwestern Ontario based team. But Glencoe was able to stay a head of Chepstow Saturday night and lead 5-3 going into the fifth inning. That's when Glencoe's offense was able to push five runs across the plate and went on to win 11-4 in six innings. The win put Glencoe in the championship game while Chepstow had to play another game against the host team for a crack at the finals.

Chepstow was able to get by Prince Albert, Saskatchewan 7-4 to set up the rematch against Glencoe in the final. This time it was Chepstow that was able to score first pushing four runs across home plate in the top of the third. The Lightning added three more in the fourth inning and won the final 7-0 in five innings. Chepstow hitters were able to stay patient at the plate waiting out six walks from Glencoe's starter then chipped in runs with singles and doubles.

Teeswater's Mac Fischer roared back after being tagged with the loss in the earlier playoff game against Glencoe, allowing just three hits in five innings of work. He struck out four and earned the win. He was named MVP.
