Walkerton Hosting Provincial Curling Championship

The best intermediate curlers in the province will converge in Walkerton for the Ontario Championships this week.

Hosting the event coincides with the 90th anniversary of the Walkerton Curling Club.

The intermediate divisions are for men over 40 and women over 35. The competition is a round robin format with no final rounds.

Co-chair of the event Maureen Schmidt says an added bonus is having a local team in both the men's and women's division. That local contingent is made up of a hometown rink skipped by Sara Almas and a men's team from Paisley, skipped by Al Hutchinson.

"We were cheering hard at the regionals." Schmidt said. "With the Paisley team (too) it is great that we have two teams from Grey-Bruce"

Teams qualified by winning a regional competition. Along with the local rinks their will be teams from Oshawa, Orillia, Trenton and many other parts of the province.

The first draws of the competition begin Wednesday afternoon at the Walkerton Curling Club.
