A Wingham native is making a name for himself at the university level. Greg Dodds was named Western's Male Athlete of the Week yesterday.
The goaltender plays for the varsity men's hockey team where he was given the number one job heading into his second season of OUA play. This past week he stopped all 38 shots he faced in a 3-0 win over McGill.
Dodds said getting the confidence of his coaches ahead of the season has given him a chance to prove himself at a high level.
"I was ready to not disappoint and go out there and impress everyone," Dodds said by phone in London "especially my teammates, I wanted to earn their trust in the net."
His name on the number one spot is not just for the Western Mustangs' game sheet. Dodds is currently leading the province in goals against average (1.76), as well as save percentage (.949). The two goalies trailing him in that category are former QMJHL goaltender Francis Desrosiers and ex OHL'er Kevin Bailie. These stats also hold up nationally. Dodds is third in the country in goals against average (Blyth's Anthony Peters is second) and second in save percentage.
Dodds says a team is what makes this happen. He was honored to be recognized by his school, but the stats don't come without a team in front of him.
"I've been working hard, and its nice to see hard work pay off but It's not just me out there."
Dodds is 6-2 through his first eight games of the season. His Mustangs are 6-3 through nine and sit in third place in the OUA West.
