Provincial police seized thousands of unmarked cigarettes from inside a vehicle stopped at a sobriety checkpoint in Grey Highlands on Halloween.
The vehicle reportedly entered the RIDE checkpoint Grey Bruce OPP officers had set up on West Back Line around 3:20 p.m. on Saturday. Officers allegedly spotted cannabis within the vehicle which led to a search.
Approximately 7,000 unmarked cigarettes were seized, police said.
A 41-year-old Grey Highlands resident was arrested and charged with driving with cannabis readily available, possession of unmarked cigarettes, and using an unauthorized licence plate.
Additionally a 39-year-old passenger is charged with failing to properly wear a seat belt.
Police are using the seizure as a reminder to the public that unmarked cigarettes are illegal in Ontario.
"The purchase, possession, and distribution of unmarked tobacco products undermine public safety, evade provincial taxes, and support the illegal tobacco market," police said in a statement released on Monday.
Anyone with information about illegal tobacco activity is encouraged to call police at 1-888-310-1122.
