Hanover officially kicks off construction of new police station

The Town of Hanover has officially kicked off construction of the new Hanover Police Station.

Mayor Sue Paterson and members of Council were joined by the New Police Station Project Committee, Hanover Police Service Board Chair Selwyn Hicks, Hanover Police Chief Chris Knoll, Deputy Chief George Hebblethwaite, project consultants, and community members on Monday night to officially mark the beginning of construction.

The new police station will be constructed adjacent to the Civic Theatre at the former fire hall property located at 443 10th Avenue, replacing the current police facility that has served the community since 1979. The work is being completed by Domm Construction Ltd. for $10.18 million. Council had budgeted up to $11.3 million plus HST to support the construction of the new facility and associated project costs.

Construction of the new facility is expected to continue through 2027.

"The new station will provide our members with a modern, functional and efficient facility that supports current policing needs while allowing for future growth. We appreciate the support of Council, the Police Service Board and our community as we move forward with this exciting project," shared Hanover Police Chief Chris Knoll.

The new two-storey, 15,000 square foot facility is designed to "support modern policing operations, improved functionality, accessibility and long-term service delivery for the Hanover community," according to a statement from the Town of Hanover. The building will also feature secure outdoor storage facility and an accessible public washroom that will serve residents and visitors in downtown Hanover.

"Today marks an important milestone for Hanover. Our new police station is an investment in community safety, responsible planning and the future growth of our municipality. The facility has been thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of our police service while creating a lasting asset for residents for decades to come," said Mayor Paterson.
