A recent emergency on the water in Goderich resulted in a canoeist being treated for hypothermia.
According to Huron County OPP, on October 3 just before 11:30 a.m., police responded alongside Huron County Paramedic Services to a marine emergency in the water near the Goderich salt mine.
A concerned citizen saw a person in distress in the water, in the Goderich harbour near the Maitland River inlet. Two other people nearby in an inflatable dingy came and pulled the distressed person into their vessel.
Police say the 66-year-old canoeist from Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh was in the water for 20 minutes, and was taken to a local hospital for treatment of hypothermia. They are expected to make a full recovery.
Police are reminding water enthusiasts to plan ahead, check weather forecasts, wind speeds, currents and water temperature before venturing out. The OPP would also encourage anyone enjoying the outdoors to travel in groups, if possible, to increase their level of safety in the event of an emergency.
