Huron OPP have closed Josephine Street in Wingham between Victoria Street and John Street to investigate a suspicious object.
According to police, a box containing several items was dropped off at the Salvation Army this afternoon. An employee identified one of the items as being of concern and contacted police.
Police and North Huron Fire remain on scene and as a precaution, business and surrounding area have been evacuated while the investigation continues.
The public is being asked to avoid this area as a precaution.
A temporary shelter has been set up at the North Huron Wescast Community Centre for any residents unable to return to their residence.
The area will be closed for an undetermined amount of time, as officials wait for the OPP Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) to arrive.
