Southbound drivers in Stratford will need to allow extra travel time starting Monday, September 21, 2026, as a section of Downie Street is repaved.
The City of Stratford announced that Downie Street will be closed to southbound traffic between St. Patrick Street and St. David Street for approximately two weeks. Northbound traffic through the area will remain open throughout the construction period.
The temporary disruption marks the first phase of a broader resurfacing project planned for Downie Street between St. David Street and Ontario Street. Detour signage has been installed to guide southbound drivers safely around the construction zone, and motorists are strongly encouraged to avoid the area if possible and use Erie Street as an alternative route.
Eastbound and westbound drivers can still cross Downie Street at St. Patrick Street and Douro Street, but turns onto southbound Downie Street from either location will be prohibited. Local traffic access will be preserved for vehicles traveling southbound on Waterloo Street toward Douro Street or St. Patrick Street.
Meanwhile, public transit riders can expect regular service, as the contractor is coordinating with Stratford Transit to maintain full bus access to the Downie Street terminal during all scheduled operating hours.
