A major housing development in Walkerton will take a big step forward next week.
Community leaders, including Bruce County Warden Luke Charbonneau, will host a formal groundbreaking ceremony for the project at 85 Eastridge Road at 2 p.m. Monday.
Located directly across from the Bruce Power Regional Soccer Park, the active construction site will soon host a new 41-unit residential building managed by the Bruce County Housing Corporation.
The 1.5-acre development is designed to address pressing housing demands across the region by offering a mix of one, two, and three bedroom apartments. The rental units are specifically targeted toward moderate-income households, offering viable housing options for local workers in essential sectors such as health care, child care, skilled trades, and service industries.
Municipal leaders view the project as a critical tool for workforce stability, helping to attract and retain local talent while supporting families and seniors through every life stage.
The initiative relies on strong regional collaboration, with land provided at a nominal cost by the Municipality of Brockton and significant financial backing supplied by Bruce Power.
In addition to expanding the local rental stock, the project plans to enhance the broader neighborhood environment, including working alongside Brockton to incorporate a new community-use playground nearby to encourage active living and neighborhood connection. Following Monday's shovel-turning ceremony, crews will proceed with full construction activities on site.
