The Maitland Conservation River Fest has a new date after the planned celebration on August 30 was rained out.
Communications Coordinator Jayne Thompson revealed that the rescheduled drop-in event will take place from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, at the Brussels Conservation Area.
"So we've got Scales Nature Park coming, and they're going to be doing an awesome reptile show, followed by a meet and greet, so visitors can get right up close to those amazing creatures," Thompson explained. "We've got fishing for the kids. The Leo's Club in Brussels is doing a BBQ as a fundraiser."
There will also be stream health demonstrations and craft opportunities
"We're giving away tree seedlings and native pollinator seeds as well," she continued. "We're going to have lots of stream creatures on hand, and kids can also be water scientists and try water testing on their own."
The Raptors Conservancy is unable to attend the rescheduled event.
Thompson shared that the event is part of their 75th Anniversary Celebrations for Maitland Conservation.
"Our strength has always been in our community partnerships. And so we do have a number of community partners who are helping us with this event," she added. "And it gives us a chance to be right in Brussels, at that conservation area, reaching out to the local community, and having them come and celebrate the anniversary with us."
All ages are welcome to the free family event.
Organizers recommend parking along Sports Drive to enter near the dam, as Alfred Street parking will be limited primarily to accessibility access.
