Ahead of the final long weekend of the summer, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding everyone to make safety a priority on roads, trails ,and waterways.
Statistics show Labour Day weekend has seen more fatalities than any other long weekend over the last decade, with 69 collisions and 76 deaths since 2015.
Lambton OPP Cst. and Community Engagement Officer Tyler Campbell said if you're going to be out on the water, have a buddy.
"Never swim alone," said Campbell. "We also want to make sure we are wearing a life-jacket or personal floatation device. Having one nearby isn't the same as wearing one. Emergencies can happen quickly, and there may not be time to put one on in the water."
Campbell also reminds swimmers and boaters to check weather and water conditions before heading out, and to let others know where you will be and when you expect to return.
"Even strong swimmers can get in trouble because of waves, currents, cold water, fatigue or changing weather conditions. Don't take unnecessary chances," he said.
The Labour Day long weekend, or unofficial end to summer, can be one of the busiest long weekends on area roads and highways.
"We want motorists to drive safely," said Campbell. "There's going to be lots of traffic on the roads as it's the last weekend before kids go to school, and be vigilant when you're driving."
Speeding, impaired driving, driver inattention and lack of seatbelt use continue to be leading causes of fatal crashes.
OPP also have a zero tolerance for drinking while boating.
Impaired boating is a criminal offence and can result in licence suspension, vehicle impoundment and court costs.
