The gates to seven Huron County farms will open to the public later this month.
The Fall Farm Frolic, a self-guided exploration of local agriculture, will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on September 19. The free event will allow people to meet farmers, learn how food is grown, see animals up close, and shop for local products.
This year people can get a behind-the-scenes look at Weth Mushrooms, Bayfield Lavender Farm, Harm-N-E Longhorns, Govers Family Farm and Pumpkin Patch, Maelström Winery, Malette Family Farm, and Meeting Place Organic Farm.
In addition to the farm tour, many locations will also run special arts programming by the Huron Arts and Heritage Network. Encaustic artist Linda Wiebe will be at Weth Mushrooms, while cartoonist and illustrator Mike Shiell and the Huron Harp School will set up at Bayfield Lavender Farm. There will be pumpkin painting with artist Abby Bos at Govers Family Farm and Pumpkin Patch, a traditional rug hooking demonstration at Malette Family Farm, a scene from Aylmer’s Ghost performed by playwright Ted Johns at Meeting Place Organic Farm, and live music from Matthew Hussey at Maelström Winery.
“The Fall Farm Frolic is a chance for people to experience Huron County agriculture in a fun and approachable way,” said County of Huron Tourism Officer Rick Sickinger. “Visitors can talk directly with farmers, discover the variety of food and agricultural products produced here, and enjoy some great arts and cultural experiences along the way.”
