Residents across Grey County will soon have a unique opportunity to peek behind the curtain of municipal senior care as local facilities open their doors for a day of community connection.
Grey County is inviting community members to visit one of its three long-term care homes on Friday, September 18 as part of Long-Term Care Community Engagement Day, a province-wide initiative celebrating the important role long-term care plays in supporting residents, families and communities. Rockwood Terrace in Durham, Lee Manor in Owen Sound, and Grey Gables in Markdale are each participating with unique plans for the day.
This region-wide event invites family members, neighbours, volunteers, and local partners to drop by, view interactive displays, connect with staff, and gain a firsthand look at how county-run care operates. Beyond showcasing daily services, the initiative aims to deepen public understanding of senior living while honouring the dedicated staff, volunteers, and residents who form these vibrant communities. Visitors can experience directly how these facilities foster a sense of belonging and enhance everyday life for those who call them home.
“Grey County is proud to participate in Engagement Day and offer the community a glimpse into the many ways we ‘Colour It’ for our residents every day,” said Grey County Director of Long-Term Care and Senior Services, Jennifer Cornell. “Long-term care is about far more than healthcare. It’s about creating homes where residents continue living with purpose, dignity, connection and joy. Our teams strive to provide emotion-first, person-centred care that respects each resident’s individuality, preferences and life story.”
To ensure the safety of both residents and staff, organizers request that anyone experiencing symptoms or recovering from an illness stay home, as standard health screenings will take place at the entrance.
Each location has planned a distinct schedule for visitors. Lee Manor in Owen Sound will host guests from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and again from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at 875 6th Street East, featuring information tables, live entertainment, and refreshments. Over in Markdale, Grey Gables will welcome the public to 206 Toronto Street South from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for guided tours, music, and snacks. Meanwhile, Rockwood Terrace, located at 575 Saddler Street East in Durham, will open from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., offering live music, refreshments, informational booths, and updates on the facility's upcoming redevelopment project.
