A multi-million-dollar federal investment will help expand and upgrade the PMD Arena and Community Centre in Drayton.
The federal government announced Tuesday, August 25, 2026 it will provide more than $4.7 million toward the project in the Township of Mapleton.
Plans include adding a new multi-sport and community space, improving accessibility and completing energy-efficiency upgrades at the facility.
Federal Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson said investments in local recreation facilities are part of Ottawa's broader infrastructure strategy.
"Building a strong Canada starts with investing in strong communities," Robertson said.
He added the federal government is working to build infrastructure "at a speed and scale not seen in generations."
Mapleton will receive up to $4,777,344 through the Direct Delivery stream of the federal Build Communities Strong Fund.
The project is intended to provide additional recreation and community space while allowing the facility to better accommodate Mapleton's growing population.
The Build Communities Strong Fund is a $51-billion federal program supporting infrastructure projects across Canada, including recreation, housing, health, transit and climate-resilient infrastructure.
Federal officials say the Mapleton contribution remains conditional on the signing of a funding agreement and completion of applicable environmental assessment and Indigenous consultation requirements.
