Drug alert issued after 3 overdoses, 1 death in Grey-Bruce

Three overdoses, including one fatal, over the past week have prompted Grey Bruce Public Health to issue an overdose-alert to the public.

According to the health unit, the overdoses happened between August 13 and 18 in Owen Sound, Saugeen Shores, and West Grey.

The substance used in the fatal case is believed to have been fentanyl, while the non-fatal cases involved suspected methamphetamine and fentanyl.

The latest community alert comes nearly three weeks after the health unit warned of toxic levels of fentanyl in the local meth supply. That warning followed multiple overdoses in a single day in Owen Sound and Saugeen Shores.

The health unit is again urging those who use drugs to keep naloxone on hand and always have a sober friend nearby who can administer it and call 911 in the event of an overdose. Naloxone kits can be picked up at pharmacies, participating community partners and at the Grey Bruce Public Health.

Drug users can also get their supply tested by calling Supportive Outreach Services (SOS) at 519-379-8743.
