Saugeen Shores residents can learn about battery storage project

Residents in Saugeen Shores can get a look at plans for a major 400-megawatt battery energy storage project in Bruce County.

Neoen Ontario has officially launched its Class Environmental Assessment for the Neoen Battery, formerly known as the Tara Battery.

According to a notice on the company's website, the planned project, known as C1, would be located 6.5 kilometres south of Port Elgin on Concession Road 2.

The facility holds a 20-year contract with Ontario’s grid operator to store surplus electricity and supply power during peak demand.

The project is expected "to help meet growing electricity demand by storing and supplying up to 400 MW of power for a 4-hour duration. Neoen will charge and discharge power directly to and from the high-voltage grid, optimizing the use of existing resources," stated the notice.

Interested residents can attend a community open house Thursday at Powerlink in Port Elgin. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
